With most achievements in life, the higher the score, the greater the glow.

But when the achievement is a ranking on the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, the lower the number, the louder the cheer.

The cheers were particularly robust throughout Ford Motor Co. as news spread it recently achieved its best ranking ever in the industry-leading quality study. Plus, two Ford vehicles – the Mustang and Expedition – ranked as the best vehicles in their respective categories.

Ford scores big in quality study

Now in its 31st year, the Initial Quality Study measures the number of problems consumers experience with a new vehicle during the first 90 days of ownership. A lower score reflects higher quality. Ford chalked up several notable achievements:

  • A score of 86 problems per 100 vehicles – outshining an industry average of 97 problems per 100 vehicles. This improvement helped Ford tie for fourth among all vehicle brands, up from 11th in 2016.
  • A ranking of No. 2 among all non-premium vehicle brands –Ford's best ranking in the history of the quality study.
  • The Mustang ranked No. 1 in the category of “midsize sporty car.”
  • The Expedition ranked tops in the category of “large SUV.”

Consumers are responding to Ford innovations, executive says

Ford executives attribute these impressive rankings to the company's ongoing commitment to innovations, particularly:

  • Releasing 13 electrified vehicles in the next five years -- notably, hybrid versions of the Mustang and F-150 and a fully electric, small SUV with a hoped-for range of at least 300 miles.
  • Equipping about 70 percent of its vehicles with advanced SYNC 3 technology.
  • Offering more models with new driver-assist features, such as adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning.
  • Continuing the rapid rollout of advanced EcoBoost engine technology.
  • Employing “lightweighting” innovations in its F-Series trucks, which combine to deliver improved performance, capability and efficiency.

“As Ford accelerates the pace of innovation, we believe this best-ever quality ranking demonstrates our new technologies are reliable and easy to use,” said Bennie Fowler, Group Vice President of Quality Efforts at Ford. “The rapid improvements rated by third-party quality experts such as J.D. Power motivate us to improve our fitness even more as quality is a race that’s never finished.”

Ford is winning the race for public esteem

2017 is proving to be a “good news” year for Ford. The J.D. Power rankings were released just months after a Reader's Digest survey showed American consumers trust Ford for the quality, value and reliability of its products more than any other car and SUV maker in America.

Trust was the operative word in the "Reader's Digest Most Trusted Brand" survey, with nearly 80 percent of the study’s 4,500 participants saying they would choose a brand that has been identified as "trusted" over another brand when the quality and prices of all products are similar.

Ford products and innovations are on proud display at Ford County, the leading Ford dealership in Las Vegas. The sales team is always eager and available to answer questions – and share in the glow of owning a Ford vehicle.
